Match results..
Well with weather to die for, warm sunshine, temps around 26 degrees celsius and
barely a breath of wind we knew it was going to be a tough day to get fish feeding
and it sure was! Steve had fished the venue on Thursday and had 25lb of skimmers in
only 4 hours but as he said himself on the day it fished like a totally different lake.
Due to very low water levels we changed venue on two occasions for this last match so as
to even be able to catch fish but Trinity was so low it would have been impossible to fish
it. Drumlona may have produced given the warm weather we had got over the past week but I
decided we would settle on the venue that we started on after hearing it was fishing very
well early in the week. We had a poor turnout on the day between one thing and another and
it did ultimately affect the placings for 3rd place in the end.
Anyway we all fished it and had a laugh as usual and enjoyed the sights as we endeavoured to
entice what little fish we could into our swims and then safely to our nets. We had only one
blank on the day and that unfortunate ability fell to young Brendan who's heart just wasn't in
it due to the fact that he was in holiday mode and was flying off to Spain the following day
and so after a couple of biteless hours when others around had caught the odd fish he decided
to call it a day and get some packing done. Enjoy the hols mate and see you when you get back!!
Anyway we had a new winner on the day and I am delighted for him as he got a plumb draw on the day
and a nice swim that fished better than the rest of ours, well done John, great result to end
the league on!
So even though first and second place were more or less decided before a float hit the water here
I would just like to congratulate Lee on finishing first for our winter league, well done mate!!
Also I would like to congratulate Steve on coming in a close second after having a few disastrous
results but that one day on the Ditch put him right back into contention or it might have been a
very different story. Who says peg positions don't affect results?? LoL
I am delighted to have finished in third although it was slightly by default as Tony didn't turn up on the
day for some reason but I'm not complaining.
A huge thanks to one and all for making it a great winter with a lot of banter and hilarity to keep us all
in good form. Also a big thank you must go to Venture Sports in Monaghan (Dick and Brian especially) without
whom we would have been stuck for bait on occassion but also more importantly for donating prizes to our club for use
at our matches over the winter and coming summer months! Thank you Dick, much appreciated!!
And now to todays and the final results:
And the final standings in the league after the last match:
| Lee Jex | 28 points | ||
| Steve Baxter | 30 points | ||
| Derek Gibbons | 35 points | ||
| Tony Swift | 37 points | ||
| James Wright | 44 points | ||
| Mark Handsley | 46 points | ||
| John Conlon | 48 points | ||
| Brendan Aherne | 54 points | ||
| John Mc Nally | 61 points |
Now given the fact that everyone was allowed to drop one bad result/non attendence from their overall results the table would look like this after the final match:
| Lee Jex | 19 points | ||
| Steve Baxter | 24 points | ||
| Derek Gibbons | 26 points | ||
| Tony Swift | 28 points | ||
| James Wright | 35 points | ||
| Mark Handsley | 37 points | ||
| John Conlon | 39 points | ||
| Brendan Aherne | 45 points | ||
| John Mc Nally | 52 points |
So with plenty still up for grabs we arrived eager for a good days fishing again
on the ditch. Weather seemed perfect, light winds, slightly overcast conditions and
no rain but the sun peeping through the cloud every now and again. The drain had a good
colour in it and was low but we felt sure that we would have similar weights again for
our penultimate match.
We set up in near quiet as noise here can kill it with all the movement on the bank and
were all in at 10:00 a.m. having decided to give it an extra hour and fish until 4 p.m.
After 1½ hours only one of the 9 anglers that attended had caught any fish and we all
unanimously decided to call it quits and the winner was to be Steve. Well done mate!!
He also had picked himself in the Golden peg so he won that too. . .
On discussion with another club in Dublin I have deemed it fair to award the other 8
anglers with the most possible points for not catching, therefore all 8 have amassed 9
points for finishing in last place ultimately.
Having travelled so far for a days fishing a few of us decided to fish elsewhere and so
headed around the corner to another area and spent a few hours catching some roach until
we all headed our own way in the early afternoon. We had time for a quick pint in the
local pub though in celebration of Brendan's birthday. Thanks again to all for making
the effort and i think it was inevitable that we would end up with a blank on the cards
at some stage but for 8 to blank is a feat I won't or anyone else will want to see
repeated anytime again soon!
And now to todays results:
And the overall standings in the league after the match day seven:
| Lee Jex | 22 points | ||
| Steve Baxter | 26 points | ||
| Tony Swift | 31 points | ||

| John Conlon | 47 points | ||
| Brendan Aherne | 49 points | ||
| John Mc Nally | 55 points |
Well we settled down to fish on a very windswept Town Lake in Killashandra for match day.
With a westerly wind gusting at times it made casting a distance quite tricky but neccessary as
the better fish were further out with summer fishing still some way off. It was a fairly mild day and
we only got caught out a couple of times with short spells of rain but nothing too heavy. We have been
blessed with the weather up to now and hopefully we'll see out the last couple of matches without a
torrential downpour.
This venue with the wind meant feeder was the order of the day and everyone fished this method and
thankfully again we had no blanks. There was one really good fish during the day and that went to the
winner on the day (well done Lee), a nice 3lb bream.
Thanks again to all who turned out for this and I look forward to seeing you all at the next match in
3 weeks time on Killykeen where we will fish our penultimate match.
And now to todays results:
And the overall standings in the league after the match day six:
| Lee Jex | 13 points | ||
| Tony Swift | 22 points | ||

| Steve Baxter | 25 points | ||
| James Wright | 29 points | ||
| Mark Handsley | 35 points | ||
| John Conlon | 36 points | ||
| Brendan Aherne | 40 points | ||
| John Mc Nally | 46 points |
Due to weather conditions, i.e lack of water we switched and had our fifth winter league outing
today, St Patrick's Day on Lough Muckno in Castleblaney. It was a good mild day and with a strong
southerly breeze off our back it was easily fished on White Island. Depths were better further out and
there were some good individual fish caught on the day but only in small quantities.
The venue suited the feeder and everyone fished this method and we had no blanks thankfully although we
did have to wait a considerable time for bites from time to time over the six hours we fished.
Thanks to all for turning up and I look forward to seeing you all at the next match on Town Lake in
Killashandra on Saturday week (27th March) where we will be back on the tip again no doubt!
And now to todays results:

| Brendan Aherne | 34 points | ||
| John Mc Nally | 37 points |
Well we had our fourth league match on Sunday gone and although it was Valentines Day
we all escaped the women and had a good turn out again for our match on the ditch. Thankfully
the colder weather has abated over the past few weeeks and we were left a different set of problems
in the the levels were well down and most of us were fishing into only a foot to 18 inches of water.
Despite this everybody caught fish and although Mark paid only one match fee he decided to fish two
pegs, in fairness he did seem to draw the shallowest peg on the stretch at only 8 inches deep.
The bank was fairly frozen when we arrived but we all were set up early and started at 10:30 and fished
until 3:30 p.m. and after the weigh in we were all on way home to spend a few hours with our respective
valentines.
Again, thanks to all for turning up and I look forward to seeing you all at the next match in three weeks
time, again on a Sunday but then we are back to Saturdays for teh remaining matches.
And now to the results:
And the overall standings in the league after the match day four are:
| Tony Swift | 11 points | ||
| Lee Jex | 11 points | ||
| Steve Baxter | 15 points | ||
| James Wright | 19 points | ||
| Derek Gibbons | 20 points | ||
| Mark Handsley | 23 points | ||
| John Conlon | 25 points | ||
| Brendan Aherne | 27 points | ||
| John Mc Nally | 28 points |
After what can only be described as the worst and coldest winter we have had in years we
eventually got around to our third winter league match. Due to the freezing conditions we
were kept from fishing our heaviest fish comp on Lough Ramor boat pool which was a real pity but
we brushed the cobwebs off our gear yesterday with an outing to the Boards at Belturbet.
Everybody caught fish again and although it was bitterly cold from start to finish due to a
constant mist which shrouded us all day it didn't dampen spirits, after all this is winter fishing!
We welcomed back John Conlon after him missing our last match but John Mc Nally couldn't make this
one unfortunately.
The jetty was frozen, we slipped and slid along it all morning, I dropped two sections of my pole
in the drink which was my excuse for finishing so poorly but hey that's fishing for you.
Thanks to all for turning up considering the driving conditions from Dublin and Dundalk and I look
forward to seeing you all at the next match in three weeks time. Details about the venue to follow
but I have a plan...
And now the results:
And the overall standings in the league after the match day three are:
| Tony Swift | 8 points | ||
| Lee Jex | 10 points | ||
| Steve Baxter | 10 points | ||
| James Wright | 12 points | ||
| Mark Handsley | 17 points | ||
| Derek Gibbons | 18 points | ||
| Brendan Aherne | 19 points | ||
| John Mc Nally | 20 points | ||
| John Conlon | 21 points |
Our second winter league match was held yesterday Saturday 12th December on Peter's Lake
in Monaghan town. There was a good turn out again and although we missed John Conlon as
he had a bit of trouble with a work injury (get well soon mate..) we still had eight members including the very welcome
John Mc Nally who has just joined our club now too and below are the results of the second match.
Again everybody caught on the day and similar weights to last outing went near to winning. It was
a good day and not quite as cold as the previous session and there seemed to be more in the way
of skimmers showing this time. I think everybody enjoyed the outing and I lok forward to seeing
you all at our first knockup of the New Year on January 2nd as per our club calendar.
Thanks again to Venture Sports Tackle Shop in Monaghan town (Glaslough Street) who
opened early to facilitate us for bait, thanks lads!
And now to the results:
And the overall standings in the league after the match day two are:
| Steve Baxter | 4 points | ||

| Derek Gibbons | 11 points | ||
| John Mc Nally | 11 points | ||
| John Conlon | 16 points | ||
| Mark Handsley | 16 points |
First winter league match was held yesterday Saturday 28th November on Peter's Lake
in Monaghan town. There was a good turn out for our league and below were the results.
All anglers caught on the day with plenty of small fish but also some better sized roach
and hybrids came to the net for the winning anglers. It certainly was a cold day and barely
got above 5 degrees all day but due to the calm conditions we managed to bare it out but as
we were finishing up at 3:30 and starting the weigh-in the temp seemed to plummet again and
it was absolutely bitter with the mist descending on the lake again.
A sincere thanks goes to Venture Sports Tackle Shop in Monaghan town (Glaslough Street) who
put up two prizes on the day and also have donated two overall league prizes. In the current
climate I would like to take this opportunity to applaud them for their generosity and by helping
our club out in the way they have and also for opening early to facilitate anyone who hadn't got
their bait sorted out before hand. It's good deeds like this that will see businesses like Venture
Sports get through the recession by opening their doors to help out needy anglers and by return we
will be advertising their shop on our main site soon. Anyone in Monaghan should check out their
shop as they have all you may need for angling and many other sporting ventures.
And now to the results:
And the overall standings in the league after the first match are as follows:
| Steve Baxter | 1 point | ||
| James Wright | 2 points | ||
| Tony Swift | 3 points | ||
| Lee Jex | 4 points | ||
| Brendan Aherne | 5 points | ||
| Derek Gibbons | 6 points | ||
| John Conlon | 7 points | ||
| Mark Handsley | 8 points |
